OUTMUSIC HERITAGE AWARD

Celebrating early, on-going and far-reaching contributions
to LGBT music and the entire LGBT Community

With great pride and admiration,
the Board of Outmusic and our Advisors
are pleased to announce

Ron Romanovsky & Paul Phillips

as recipients of the Second Annual
Outmusic Heritage Award

Romanovsky & Phillips

ROMANOVSKY & PHILLIPS

Ron Romanovsky & Paul Phillips are the most popular out-of-the-closet gay male singing duo in history. Releasing 7 albums and touring extensively from 1983 to 1999, R & P have sold a total of more than 80,000 albums. They made the significant contribution of releasing quality recordings with material that could be both humorous and political at a time when no one else was doing this. They braved the trail for others to follow, and made it safer for performers to be out in their work. Scores of LGBT performers credit them as pioneers who inspired them.

R & P began their career at San Francisco’s Valencia Rose Cafe in 1982 as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mike Night. Before long they were lauded by Bay Area critics, who dubbed them the “Gay Simon and Garfunkle”. The winners of numerous awards, R & P appeared on the main stages of both the 1987 and 1993 National Marches on Washington and in 1993 were profiled on In the Life. In 1990, three of their albums appeared concurrently on Ladyslipper’s bestseller list, and in 1993 R & P broke ground as the first openly gay male act to perform on the main stage of NACA (National Association of Campus Activities) National Conference at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

In 1998 R & P wrote the original songs for the Off-Broadway musical Jayson. Their songs have also been performed by lesbian/gay choruses throughout the US.

Phillips served as producer of the posthumous True to Myself album of songs by singer/songwriter Joe Bracco who died of AIDs in 1991. Romanovsky currently works as an accordionist, and in 2002 released a solo CD “Je m’appelle Dadou”.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORT

The OUTMUSIC AWARD for OUTSTANDING SUPPORT recognizes exemplary involvement by non-musicians in supporting and furthering the work of LGBT musicians and the OUTMUSIC organization.

The recipient of the 2003 OMA for OUTSTANDING SUPPORT is Chicago-based journalist Gregg Shapiro. We honor Shapiro for his support of LGBT musicians through his widely distributed work in print and radio, for the high-quality of his music criticism and feature writing, and for his energetic championing of LGBT musicians and music organizations, including OUTMUSIC. For the past ten years Shapiro's keen intellect and boundless enthusiasm has served to dramatically increase the visibility and credibility of LGBT musicians nationwide. His work throughout 2002 - and to the present - continues to be fresh, cutting-edge, and supportive.

Shapiro is an on-air contributing co-host and the music director at Windy City Radio (Chicago), as well as contributor to the Life Outside syndicated radio program. He is the music editor at Next Magazine (NYC) and senior entertainment writer at Windy City Times (Chicago). He is also a contributing writer to more than a dozen queer publications from coast to coast and in Canada, including Gay & Lesbian Times (San Diego), OutSmart Magazine (Houston), Between The Lines (Detroit), Bay Area Reporter (San Francisco), OutFront Colorado (Denver), Outlook News (OH) and Philadelphia Gay News, among others. In 1999, Shapiro was inducted into Chicago's Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. He lives in Chicago with his life-partner, writer and educator Rick Karlin, and their dog Dusty.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

The 2003 Special Recognition OMA - honoring special achievements in LGBT music - recognizes the role Amazon Country - a weekly radio program on Philadelphia's WXPN-FM - has played since 1974 in fostering Lesbian-Feminist arts and culture. We honor Debra D'Alessandro for forwarding this commitment as Amazon Country's longtime and current host and producer. And we acknowledge Amazon Country for leading the way for other LGBT related radio programs to spring into being.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

The 2003 Special Recognition OMA - honoring special achievements in LGBT music - recognizes Dutchboy's leading role in creating the LGBT Hip-Hop scene, his creation of the Phat Family compilations and website, his continuing fight for the LGBT Hip-Hop cause, and his inspiration to - and support of - other queer Hip-Hop artists.
